Upon Our Arrival in Warri, They Warned That Anyone Following Me Must Be Unarmed – Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has recounted a dramatic episode from his years in office, revealing how he once entered a Niger Delta militant camp without the protection of armed security personnel.

According to a report by Channels Television, speaking at the public presentation of “Scars and the Boko Haram Conundrum” on Friday, October 3rd 2025, Jonathan reflected on the challenges of managing insecurity during his presidency. He told the gathering that his experience in the Niger Delta showed him the importance of direct dialogue in conflict resolution.

“When we landed in Warri, before reaching the camp, they told me that anyone following me must not carry weapons,” Jonathan said. According to him, even his Aide-de-Camp (ADC), Chief Security Officer (CSO), and police escorts were ordered to surrender their firearms before he could be allowed entry.

The former president explained that despite strong objections from top security officials, including the Delta State Commissioner of Police and the State Director of the State Security Service (SSS), he insisted on proceeding unarmed into the militants’ base.

“I told them I will go. So even my officers…handed over their guns,” Jonathan recalled. “When we landed at the camp, these boys lined up with assault rifles facing the bush, not even looking at me. We marched through them and held a meeting with their leaders for almost an hour. That was the beginning of solving the Niger Delta crisis.”

Jonathan’s remarks were delivered before an audience that included government officials, traditional rulers, security chiefs, and religious leaders. He praised retired military officers for documenting their experiences in counter-insurgency, stressing that such records would be vital for future generations to understand Nigeria’s security challenges..See.
