According to a report by the Punch on Saturday, October 4, 2025, a brutal bandit assault has transformed the once-peaceful Kwara community of Oke-Ode into a ghost town, following a September 28th attack that killed at least 15 residents. The violence specifically targeted the community’s protectors—local hunters, vigilantes, and a traditional leader—shattering the sense of security in this previously safe agrarian settlement.
The tragedy left behind countless personal horrors, including that of 27-year-old Rilwan Tajudeen, who experienced the devastating loss in the most intimate way. He described the traumatic scene, recalling, “I carried him in a pool of blood. Six bullets were removed from his body. He died in my hands.” His father, a charcoal dealer simply visiting the market, became an innocent casualty of the indiscriminate violence.

Local defenders reported being critically outgunned during the confrontation, with one hunter explaining they faced sophisticated weaponry with insufficient arms and ammunition. This firepower disparity, coupled with allegations that their guns had been collected for “servicing” just before the attack, left the community dangerously vulnerable to the well-armed assailants.
The attack’s impact extended beyond immediate fatalities, with reports of mass kidnappings including entire families and even a two-month-old infant. This triggered a rapid community evacuation, with commercial drivers transporting residents in over 200 vehicles as fear overwhelmed the population.
In response to the crisis, Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq has committed to establishing a civilian task force to strengthen local security. The state police command has also intensified joint operations with military and security agencies to restore order and confront the bandit threat in the region.
The social fabric of Oke-Ode has been fundamentally torn, with institutions like the School of Nursing relocating hundreds of students to Ilorin for safety. The community now stands empty, its markets silent and future uncertain, as survivors grapple with the trauma and mourn the loss of those who died protecting their home.
