Netanyahu Reportedly Caught Off Guard by Trump’s Remarks, Interprets Hamas Reaction to U.S. Plan as Rejection

According to a report by The Times of Israel, on Friday Oct 3, 2025, as reported by Channel 12 news, US President Donald Trump’s statement that he believes Hamas is “ready for a lasting peace” and his demand that Israel immediately cease bombing Gaza caught Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu off guard.

The timing and tone of Trump’s Truth Social post caught Netanyahu off guard, according to an Israeli official cited by the network. The post came immediately after Hamas responded to the American peace initiative.

The article states that before Trump made his statement, Netanyahu gathered a group of people to discuss the response from Hamas. During that discussion, the prime minister allegedly interpreted the terrorist group’s reaction as a denial of the US proposal to stop the conflict and release the captives.

According to Channel 12, Netanyahu stressed the need for Israel’s stance to be coordinated with Washington’s in order to prevent Hamas’s statement from being seen as a confirmation of the American framework.

Netanyahu saw the response as a rejection, while non-elected officials in Israel’s system think the Hamas statement could still pave the door for an agreement, according to the network.

“According to the statement just released by Hamas, I believe they are ready for a lasting peace,” Trump wrote on Truth Social earlier, adding that Israel “must immediately stop the bombing of Gaza so that we can get the hostages out safely and quickly.”

For the first time since re-entering office, he publicly criticised Israel’s military operation in the enclave in his speech. It appears that the two allies may have different perspectives on the current diplomatic process, since Trump’s understanding of Hamas’s response differs from Netanyahu’s.

Washington seems determined to continue talks to finalise the contents of its proposal, even though Israel’s leadership considers Hamas’s position as inadequate.

According to Channel 12, there will be ongoing talks among Israel’s decision-makers on how to align with the US while still standing firm on the stance that Hamas’s response does not constitute an agreement.
