The crisis within the minority caucus of the House of Representatives was said to have been temporarily resolved following the intervention of the Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas.
Kingsley Chinda
According to The Punch, the Minority Leader of the House, Kingsley Chinda, had been in the news recently after filing a lawsuit to stop moves by some members of the minority caucus to remove him from office.
Chinda, who represents the Obio Akpor Federal Constituency of Rivers State and is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was accused by some caucus members of failing to provide the expected leadership since assuming office in 2023. They alleged that he had not acted as a strong opposition voice because of his close relationship with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, a known ally of President Bola Tinubu.

However, revealing the real reason why the northern caucus wanted to impeach Chinda, a lawmaker who spoke to The Punch under the condition of anonymity said that part of the caucus’ anger stemmed from a claim made by the Deputy Minority Whip, George Ozodinobi, who was seen in a viral video boasting that he had inserted projects worth ₦19 billion into the 2024 budget.
According to him, Ozodinobi’s statement remained a major source of concern among members, as he claimed to have ₦19 billion worth of projects in the 2024 Appropriation Act, whereas most lawmakers had allocations of only about N1 billion. He questioned whether this disparity was the reason Chinda and other minority leaders had remained unusually silent on critical national issues.
“Ozodinobi’s comment is still of concern to us.He claimed that he had N19 billion in the budget believed to be the 2024 Appropriation Act. Members have only a paltry N1 billion.
“Is this why Chinda and other leaders of the minority caucus hardly speak up when you expect them to?” he asked.
Meanwhile, Chinda was said to be planning a series of meetings with members of the minority caucus elected on the platforms of various opposition parties in the coming weeks as part of efforts to retain his position as one of the presiding officers of the House of Representatives.
