Nnamdi Kanu Allegedly Said That If a Police Officer Kills Innocent People, His Gun Should Be Taken and He Should Be Killed—Opara

Speaking during an interview on Symfoni TV, human rights lawyer, Barrister Maxwell Opara, has insisted that the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, is a victim of ethnic persecution, not justice. Opara said Kanu’s continued detention has nothing to do with terrorism, as alleged by the Federal Government, but everything to do with his identity as an Igbo man.

The lawyer argued that despite years of prosecution, no credible evidence has been presented in court to justify the terrorism charges. According to him, the government has failed to prove any act of violence linked directly to Kanu or his movement, yet continues to hold him in violation of his constitutional rights.

Opara described Kanu’s statements as calls for self-defense and community security rather than terrorism. “Nnamdi Kanu is being held because he’s an Igbo. Because one, there’s no case against him. What are they charging him for? Terrorism. Am I right? I ask you this question, you said somebody is committing an act of terrorism, you did not tender any single evidence that this is what you find in this man,” he said.

Defending Kanu’s speeches, Opara continued, “He said that he’s going to establish Eastern Security Network (ESN) whose responsibility is to make sure that there is no kidnapper, no bandit, no terrorist in any bush in the Southeast and that he is going to approach various Eastern State Houses of Assembly to enact a bill to legitimize them. He played it in court.”

He added, “They also stated in court that he said they should kill a police officer. We played it there. What he said was that any police officer using the gun given to him to protect life and property to kill innocent persons—if you have the opportunity, collect it and kill him back in self-defense. What is wrong about that?”
