A group of demonstrators has launched a counter-protest in Abuja opposing calls for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
The protest, which began early Monday around the Unity Fountain area of the Federal Capital Territory, drew participants carrying placards with inscriptions rejecting what they described as “attempts to undermine national unity.” The protesters called on the federal government to resist pressure from groups demanding Kanu’s unconditional release.
This development comes amid growing agitation by pro-Biafra activists and human rights advocates who have repeatedly urged President Bola Tinubu’s administration to free Kanu, citing his prolonged detention despite court rulings granting him bail.

Security personnel were seen monitoring the situation to prevent clashes between opposing groups and ensure the demonstration remained peaceful.
The Department of State Services (DSS) has held Kanu since his re-arrest in 2021 on charges bordering on treasonable felony. His continued detention has fueled both domestic and international debates over human rights and national security in Nigeria.
As of press time, authorities have not issued any official statement regarding the ongoing counter-protest.
