BREAKING: FCE Obudu Provost Suspended Amid Controversy Over Vehicle Auction

Tension is rising at the Federal College of Education, FCE, Obudu, Cross River State, following the suspension of the Provost, Dr. Richard Utubaku, for three months.

His suspension, reportedly over the auctioning of unserviceable college vehicles without due process, has stirred mixed reactions among staff and students. While some support the Governing Council’s action, others have described it as unfair and unlawful.

A civil society group, Rescue Support Initiative, RSI, has condemned the move, alleging a breach of procedure and violation of the Provost’s right to fair hearing.

Addressing journalists in Calabar yesterday, RSI Country Director, Barr. Ayie Okpa, urged the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, to intervene and review the decision.

“We are not saying Dr. Utubaku is infallible or above questioning,” Okpa said. “But suspending him before issuing a query clearly breaches civil service rules and Section 33 of the 1999 Constitution, which guarantees fair hearing.”

The group insisted that the Governing Council acted in haste, describing the suspension as an abuse of process that raises questions about its legitimacy.

Utubaku, however, has defended his actions, insisting he followed due process in auctioning the vehicles.

RSI appealed to the minister to investigate the matter and ensure justice is done.
