Oshiomhole: We Can’t Conduct Elections Where Armed Men Seize Collation Centres – Akpabio

According to a report by Daily Post on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, Edo North Senator and former Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, called for an end to electoral violence during the Senate plenary.

Addressing the chamber, Oshiomhole emphasized the urgent need to reform Nigeria’s electoral process to ensure peace, fairness, and credibility in future elections.

Speaking passionately, the former governor reflected on his experience as a political leader and expressed concern over the growing trend of violence during elections.

Referring to the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, Oshiomhole recalled their time together as governors and urged his colleagues to confront the menace of armed intimidation during electoral contests.

In his words, “I don’t know if Mr. President will remember. I’m not sure I’m entitled to call the President as a witness, but just to draw your attention to what I said when we were both governors, first, the issue we must work hard to eliminate in our electoral process is violence. We can’t have an election that seems to be a war where young men and not so young, carry AK-47 either to chase away opponents or even to chase away the young men and women who are presiding over election or to take over coalition centers.”

Oshiomhole lamented that elections, which should be peaceful exercises of democratic rights, often turn into battlegrounds fueled by desperation and the misuse of power.

He urged the Senate to take a firm stand against any form of political thuggery and to enact stronger laws that deter electoral violence.
