Former Governor of Abia State, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, has expressed optimism that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) can bounce back stronger if it adopts corrective strategies centered on innovation and social justice.
Speaking during an exclusive interview with Vanguard at his country home in Umuobiakwa, Obingwa Local Government Area, Dr. Ikpeazu described the party’s current struggles as part of a natural growth curve, rather than a sign of permanent decline.
“What is happening to the PDP today is a natural response to the growth cycle. Organizations go through phases—growth, diminishing returns, and sometimes decline. What’s important is how we respond,” he said.

Ikpeazu stressed that unless the PDP takes bold steps to reform, it may have to hit rock bottom before it can rise again. “The PDP risks hitting the bottom before it can rise again if something drastic is not done,” he warned.
The former governor emphasized that the internal crisis within the party stems from complacency and a disregard for innovation and fairness. He highlighted social justice as a vital pillar for rebuilding trust among party members and the Nigerian populace.
“When people feel they have not been fairly treated, they may refuse to come to the table—or do so without sincerity,” he noted. “Social justice is as important as security in governance. People participate more when they believe the system is fair.”
He further cautioned other political parties against celebrating the PDP’s current difficulties, warning that any political group could face similar cycles if not managed with foresight and inclusion.
Dr. Ikpeazu concluded by urging party stakeholders to prioritize fairness, inclusivity, and strategic reforms in order to reposition the PDP as a credible force in Nigerian politics.
