BREAKING: Tsav Recalls How Soldiers Opened Warehouses as Inflation Rose Under Murtala

Prominent Nigerian lawyer and civil rights advocate, Mohammed Tsav, has urged the federal government to take more decisive action in tackling the country’s deepening economic crisis. Speaking in an interview with SYMFONI TV, Tsav referenced historical leadership under the late General Murtala Muhammed as an example of bold governance during times of national hardship.

According to Tsav, Nigeria is currently facing economic difficulties similar to those experienced in the 1970s, particularly with the rising cost of living and inflation affecting basic commodities such as food and fuel. He recalled that during General Murtala Muhammed’s administration, the military took direct action to ease the burden on ordinary citizens by distributing essential goods from warehouses to the public.

“When late General Murtala Muhammed came in and when inflation started rising, the soldiers went and opened all the warehouses and gave things out to people in need,” Tsav said during the interview. He pointed to this historical moment as an example of leadership that prioritized the welfare of the people over bureaucratic delays or political calculations.

Tsav’s comments come at a time when many Nigerians are calling for stronger intervention from the government to address the economic strain being felt across the country. Issues such as hoarding, artificial scarcity, and manipulation of market prices by merchants have fueled public frustration.

There is growing demand for measures that not only stabilize the economy but also ensure that relief reaches those most affected by inflation.

General Murtala Muhammed, who ruled Nigeria from 1975 until his assassination in 1976, is remembered for his tough stance against corruption and his drive for rapid reform. Tsav’s call to revisit such leadership principles serves as a reminder of the need for urgent, people-focused governance in the face of current economic realities.
