BREAKING: Ahead of PDP 2025 Convention, Lawal Urges Loyalists to Uphold Party Integrity Amid Defections

The Chairman of the Accreditation Sub-Committee of the National Convention Organising Committee (NCOC) for the 2025 Elective National Convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Governor of Zamfara State, Dauda Lawal, has reaffirmed the committee’s determination to deliver an impartial and selfless service anchored on consensus and inclusivity.

“We as leaders remain steadfast in our resolve to provide unbiased and selfless service to consensus and build a convention that is truly all-inclusive,” he declared.

Quoting an age-old maxim, the governor remarked, “another great thinker once said, alone we can do so little, together we can do so much. This word resonates deeply today. We must stand together, we must work together, we must heal together.”

Speaking at the inaugural meeting of the sub-committee held on Friday in Abuja, Lawal prayed for divine guidance and wisdom for the members, saying, “as you come on this way to your assignment, I pray for the divine intervention and wisdom, as well as guidance from each one of you. May the Almighty Allah grant you the clarity, strength and unity of purpose to excel in this task.”

According to him, the work of the accreditation sub-committee transcends routine administrative duties. “It is a sacred trust,” he said. “You are the gatekeepers of our convention’s integrity, so you can imagine the burden of trust that is imposed on all of us to be fair to everyone so that we can have a very successful convention. Inshallah.”

He drew attention to the importance of trust and direction in leadership, adding, “I’m reminded of the importance of trust. If one does not know to which port one is sailing, knowing is favorable. Our port is a successful unifying convention.”

Governor Lawal emphasized that the accreditation team occupies a crucial role in the success of the PDP convention, describing their work as the “favorable wind” guiding the ship of the party toward unity and success.

“Your work on accreditation is the favorable wind that will guide our ship and therefore you can imagine the burden that is on all of us. Without your diligence, our journey falters. Without your commitment to fairness, the very legitimacy of our proceedings could be called into question,” he cautioned.

He urged members to approach the task with total devotion and selflessness. “Therefore, I implore you, give this assignment the total dedication and selfless commitment it demands,” he appealed.

Reflecting on the broader political climate confronting the party, Lawal noted that the PDP is navigating a “turbulent and uncharted” terrain. He called for maturity, reconciliation, and collective responsibility among party members.

“Leadership comes with a lot of responsibility, but I believe all of us here that are carefully selected, we have what it takes to provide that leadership. Let us set aside our differences. Let us embrace the spirit of genuine reconciliation,” he said.

The governor likened the PDP to a family bound by shared values despite occasional disputes. “Our great party is a family, and like any family, we may have disagreements. It is inevitable no matter what we do, it’s just a matter of time. But the overall interest of this collective family must supersede individual ambitions,” he said.

On concerns over the adoption of Tanimu Turaki as consensus candidate for the chairmanship position, which some stakeholders from the North-West reportedly opposed, Lawal downplayed the disagreement, describing it as a normal occurrence in politics.

“I don’t think that should be something we should be concerned about, because in politics, it’s about give and take. No matter who is selected, there will always be agitation from the other members. So it’s normal. It is something that is internal. And we are working on making sure everybody is on board so that we can have a very, very successful conference,” he explained.

Addressing the recent defection of some governors from the PDP, Lawal maintained a calm and confident tone, saying, “let me say this. The only thing that is constant and permanent is change. Let me take you back to history. In 2015, when PDP had over 29 to 30 governors, what happened at the end of the day? I’m sure you’ll be the judge. So as I said, no shaking, no alarm.”

He emphasized that the accreditation committee forms the foundation upon which a credible and transparent convention would stand.

“We are here to lay the co-announcement for an event that will define our future. We have begun a journey and today we are bringing on board one of the most vital engines, which is the accreditation committee,” Lawal said.

He welcomed members of the sub-committee, describing their appointment as an honour and a huge responsibility.

“To the men and women selected to serve on this subcommittee, I extend a special welcome. You have been chosen not for a routine task but for one of the most critical assignments in our democratic process. The work you are about to undertake is the very foundation upon which a credible, transparent, and successful convention will be built,” he said.

He reminded the delegates of their core duties, emphasizing accuracy, fairness, and welfare.

“The mandate of this committee is both an honor as well as a very heavy burden, and your responsibilities are very clear — to prepare delegate lists, issue plates and tags for every participant, from our dedicated delegates and observers to our revered board of trustees, and to mobilize, accredit, and ensure the welfare of all delegates and dignitaries,” Lawal stated.

Fielding questions from newsmen during the inaugural meeting of the Sub-committee on Special Duties, Gov. Lawal, who is also the Chairman of the sub- committee, said agitation is normal in politics, adding that people will always be aggrieved.

Recall that some PDP politicians from North-west had on Thursday disagreed with the consensus chairmanship candidate ahead of the party national convention.

Reacting to this development, Governor Lawal said, “no matter what we do, some people will still be aggrieved. Even if we bring you, some people will say no, you have an issue. It is normal. It is part of politics. What we are doing is try and bring everybody together in the interest of this party. It is an ongoing process and I can assure that things will be okay. But it is normal to have agitation.

“You can see we have gone through a lot in the past and now, things are getting better, day by day. I am very sure, very optimistic that we will bounce back. In fact we are already bouncing back.

“In the Constitution of our party, there is a provision for consensus. So there is nothing new. It is okay. It is normal. It is part of our constitution in PDP.”
