Former Senator Dino Melaye has lamented the state of Nigeria’s moral values, expressing disappointment over what he described as a society that now glorifies corruption and dishonesty. In a recent social media post, Melaye criticized Nigerians for celebrating individuals who have looted public funds while neglecting those who work with integrity and dedication.
The outspoken politician shared his concerns alongside a photograph of a FIFA-standard stadium located in Kenya’s Kebbi region, using it as a contrast to Nigeria’s underdeveloped sports infrastructure. He suggested that while other African nations are investing in facilities that promote youth development and national pride, Nigeria continues to reward corrupt leaders whose actions have stalled progress across sectors.
Melaye stated that the country’s moral compass has been lost, noting that the culture of celebrating “thieves” and sidelining honest citizens has eroded accountability. He emphasized that this moral decay has affected governance, education, and social values, resulting in widespread poverty and underdevelopment.
According to him, “Our moral fabric is gone. We now honor thieves and mock those who choose to live honestly. Until we begin to celebrate integrity, this country will not move forward.”
His post has generated significant reactions online, with many Nigerians agreeing with his observations while others accused him of hypocrisy, given his own controversial political record. Nonetheless, Melaye’s statement has reignited discussions about the importance of ethical leadership and the need for national reorientation toward values that prioritize honesty, hard work, and service to the people.
