WhatsApp has unveiled a new message translation feature aimed at bridging language gaps among its vast global user base of over 3 billion people.
In a statement released Tuesday, the messaging giant explained how users can now translate messages directly within chats. By simply long-pressing a message and selecting ‘Translate’, users can choose the language they want to translate from or to, with options to download languages for offline use and quicker future translations.
The feature works across one-on-one conversations, group chats, and channel updates, making cross-lingual communication seamless.
For Android users, WhatsApp offers an additional convenience: the ability to enable automatic translation for an entire chat, ensuring all incoming messages are translated by default.
The rollout will be gradual, supporting selected languages on both Android and iOS devices. Initially, Android users can access translation in six languages: English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic. iPhone users will have a broader selection, with the feature launching in more than 19 languages.
WhatsApp emphasized that the new translation tool is built with privacy in mind, ensuring users’ messages remain secure while breaking down language barriers.
