Tensions flared in the House of Representatives on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, as Hon. Obi Aguocha of Abia State confronted Speaker Tajudeen Abbas over what he described as the neglect of a critical letter on the health of detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
Aguocha, representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency, raised a point of privilege, noting that his August 26, 2025 letter to the Speaker, the Attorney-General of the Federation, and President Bola Tinubu had gone unanswered.
The letter cited Nigerian Medical Association findings that Kanu was suffering from organ deficiencies and dangerously low potassium levels, warning that he was “on the verge of death” and urging urgent intervention on human rights grounds.

Speaker Abbas countered, insisting the House floor was not the proper venue for the matter and advising Aguocha to approach him directly.
He added that he was not obligated to disclose any steps taken regarding the letter.
Aguocha pressed on, noting previous attempts to engage the Speaker’s office and stressing the urgency of the matter.
The seven-minute exchange ended with Abbas ruling Aguocha out of order, but the incident has drawn national attention to the detained IPOB leader’s health and raised questions about government responsiveness to critical human rights concerns.
