The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah and Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri of abandoning their constituents for political expediency by defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC), warning that their moves signal President Bola Tinubu’s intent to forge a one-party state at the expense of Nigeria’s democracy.
In a fiery statement issued Tuesday, ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi lambasted the governors’ decisions as a choice of “political convenience over the welfare of their citizens,” accusing them of deserting their “long-suffering people” to join a party he claims has plunged Nigerians into deeper hardship.
“The recent defections by the governors of Enugu and Bayelsa states validate our position that President Bola Tinubu is bent on turning Nigeria into a one-party state, regardless of the cost to democracy or national stability,” Abdullahi declared.

The defections, which saw Mbah and Diri switch to the APC within 24 hours of each other last week alongside 19 Bayelsa lawmakers have slashed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s gubernatorial tally from 13 to eight, following earlier exits by Akwa Ibom’s Umo Eno and Delta’s Sheriff Oborevwori in 2025.
Abdullahi argued that the APC, rather than celebrating these as political victories, should face scrutiny for its failures across critical fronts.
“Nigerians can see the state of the nation. Food prices are rising daily, jobs have disappeared, and insecurity has spread to every part of the country,” he said, slamming the Tinubu administration’s record on security, economy, healthcare, anti-corruption, and governance.
Abdullahi claimed public confidence in the APC has evaporated, noting that even its former supporters now shy away from association.
He expressed dismay that the defecting governors, expected to champion an opposition vision for 2027, instead “chose cowardice over conviction.”
“They have abdicated their responsibility and joined the grand conspiracy against the Nigerian people. They did not cross over out of principle but out of fear and self-interest,” he charged.
The ADC spokesperson framed the defections as a defining moment for Nigeria’s political landscape, casting the 2027 election as a “contest between the Nigerian people and the APC elite.”
He added, “While the ruling party may be celebrating, the line has become clearer between those who seek to rescue Nigeria and those who have joined the gravy train.”
