BREAKING: Did Justice Wike Disclose Her American Citizenship Before Her Appointment?

Since it was revealed that Wike’s wife, a Justice of the Appeal Court has a dual citizenship, a status forbidden by law for such hallowed positions, there has been disquiet at the National Judicial Council (NJC) even as the matter is still boiling unsettled till now.

Look at the true scenario here.

Wike’s wife has run into problems with the law. Justice Eberechi Wike holds American citizenship. Predictably, she didn’t make this known to over 200M Nigerians while serving as a judge in Nigeria. That’s a big case because the irrevocable Constitution’s Section 28 prohibits judges from pledging allegiance to any foreign country.

Now there are internal squabbles within the National Judicial Commission (NJC). Insiders are insisting that her action is a betrayal of public trust and a violation that cannot be ignored.

The rule is clear: no judge should have divided loyalty, especially to a foreign state. Justice Eberechi Wike’s continued service compromises the judiciary’s credibility. In short, honest legal pundits are saying that Justice Eberechi Wike’s failure to declare her citizenship is not a trivial oversight but a serious constitutional violation warranting immediate removal

A judge’s primary duty is to the Nigerian state. Dual nationality undermines this duty and presents an irreconcilable conflict of interest, one of them insists.

People often say that Nigeria is increasingly becoming a land of anything goes, and if this case is treated with a wave of the hand, it means that ours is indeed a banana republic, where there’s wanton cronyism and laws are applied selectively.

We’re watching.
