BREAKING: Drama in Tanzania as President Samia Runs Almost Unopposed After Jailing Rivals

Tanzanians are heading to the polls today to elect a president, but the election is unfolding under a cloud of controversy and allegations of political repression, as nearly all major opposition figures have either been jailed, disqualified, or forced into exile.

Incumbent President Samia Suluhu Hassan, Africa’s only female head of state, is widely expected to secure victory as her ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), faces minimal resistance after months of what critics describe as a systematic campaign to silence dissent.

The country’s main opposition party, Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA), was barred from participating after electoral authorities claimed it failed to comply with campaign regulations. Its leader, Tundu Lissu, remains behind bars on treason charges stemming from his criticism of the government and its handling of civil liberties.

Another key opposition platform, ACT-Wazalendo, also saw its presidential hopeful Luhaga Mpina disqualified over alleged internal nomination irregularities a decision the party condemned as politically motivated.

Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, have warned that the electoral process has been marred by “widespread intimidation, arbitrary arrests, and restrictions on freedom of expression.” Reports of disappearances and harassment of journalists have further deepened fears of democratic backsliding in one of East Africa’s most stable nations.
