BREAKING: Former Minister Oyelese Urges Loyalty, Calls for Patience as PDP Faces Defections

An elder statesman and one of the founding fathers of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State, Elder Wole Oyelese, has called on party faithful across the state to remain steadfast and committed to rebuilding the party amid recent rumoured exits of notable stalwarts.

He said the party is currently undergoing a trying phase but emphasized that such moments are not new in politics and can be overcome through patience, internal reforms, and renewed commitment to shared ideals.

“Don’t abandon the house we contributed to building. Politics goes through seasons of trials and renewal. What we are facing today is not unprecedented — it is a phase that will surely pass. It is always darkest before the glorious dawn.”

In a statement on Tuesday, Elder Oyelese noted that many of the grievances expressed by members stem from the fallout of the last party congresses, which many perceived as lacking inclusiveness and internal democracy.

“Grievances are inevitable, and the issues of leaders relegated and unrecognized in the party congresses can still be addressed and corrected.”

Elder Oyelese urged all members to remain within the fold, assuring that the party has the internal capacity to correct its course and restore unity.

“It’s not good to abandon the house because of a leaking roof; when challenges arise — we rebuild, remodel, and reinforce. We have laboured to build this house together; we must not allow internal cracks to destroy it.”

To the Governor of Oyo State, Engineer Seyi Makinde, Elder Oyelese described the current crisis as a defining test of leadership and urged decisive intervention to mend divisions within the party.

“Where there are grievances, the Governor should quickly move in and address the issues, to make every member of the party feel relevant and wanted”, he stated.

He emphasized that politics thrives on inclusion and numbers, warning that the continuing disaffection among stakeholders could weaken the party’s base if not urgently addressed.

In conclusion, Elder Oyelese reaffirmed his belief in the resilience of the PDP and its capacity to bounce back stronger if unity, justice, and inclusion are restored.

“The PDP remains the only platform with the structure, experience, and grassroots appeal to secure the confidence of Oyo State people. Let us rebuild together. This moment too shall pass.”
