BREAKING: FRSC seeks stronger youth engagement to tackle road crashes

The Federal Road Safety Corps has called for greater youth involvement in road safety advocacy as part of efforts to curb the increasing number of traffic crashes involving young Nigerians.

The Deputy Corps Marshal, Pauline Olaye, who represented the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, made the call on Tuesday in Abuja at the 2025 Award Ceremony of the VIA GreenLight Initiative on Safe Mobility, held at the TotalEnergies House.

Mohammed noted that road traffic injuries remain one of the leading causes of death among young people in Nigeria, describing the situation as a major national concern that demands collective action.

He said, “The burden of road crashes is not just a statistic — it represents families torn apart, dreams cut short, and communities set back.

“That is why partnerships such as this are non-negotiable. The GreenLight Initiative’s Safe Mobility Project has shown that by combining advocacy, education, and youth engagement, we can drive real change on our roads.”

The Corps Marshal reaffirmed the FRSC’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with government agencies, the private sector, and civil society organisations to promote safer, more inclusive, and sustainable mobility nationwide.

He commended the GreenLight Initiative and its partners for empowering young advocates to promote road safety and sustainable mobility across the country.

Mohammed also lauded TotalEnergies for supporting the implementation of the Safe Mobility Project since its inception in February, noting that the company’s investment had enabled the project to reach schools and communities in Lagos, Rivers, and the Federal Capital Territory.

He congratulated the award recipients for their contributions to road safety and urged them to remain ambassadors of safe driving practices in their communities.

“Every positive action, no matter how small, contributes to saving lives and building a safer nation,” he added.

Nigeria continues to record one of the highest rates of road traffic deaths in Africa, with young people among the most affected. According to the World Health Organisation, road traffic crashes remain a leading cause of death for individuals aged 5–29 years globally — a trend reflected in Nigeria, where unsafe road practices, poor infrastructure, and limited safety awareness among pedestrians and drivers contribute to daily casualties.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Managing Director of TotalEnergies Upstream Nigeria Limited, Matthieu Bouyer, congratulated the winners and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supporting youth-driven safety initiatives.

Bouyer said the VIA Safe Mobility for Youths initiative was created to empower students to become ambassadors of safe mobility by equipping them with the skills to identify and navigate risks during their daily commute to and from school.

“This initiative provides a platform for young minds to express bold ideas and develop practical solutions to road safety challenges in their communities,” he said. “We are proud that the programme is entrenching a renewed culture of safety awareness across the country.”

Launched in May 2025, the programme engaged over 600 students from 30 public secondary schools across Lagos, Rivers, and the Federal Capital Territory through classroom sessions, risk-mapping walks, and creative presentations addressing pedestrian safety, responsible driving, and safer school journeys.

Government Secondary School, Orozo (FCT), emerged as the national champion, while Government Girls Secondary School, Orominieke (Rivers State), and Army Day Secondary School, Asokoro (FCT), finished second and third, respectively.
