Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Iormem Alia, has announced plans to reinstate local government workers who were removed from the state’s payroll in 2011 and 2012.

The initiative is part of the governor’s broader effort to correct past injustices and promote fairness within Benue’s public service, particularly at the grassroots level.

According to a circular issued by the Benue State Local Government Service Commission, signed by Owoicho Odeh, Director of Administration and Finance, on behalf of the Commission’s Chairman, the government has directed a comprehensive screening exercise for all affected workers. The circular, dated October 10, 2025, was addressed to all Local Government Chairmen and the Director-General of Services and Administration.

The exercise will focus on workers employed in 2011 and 2012 who were subsequently removed from the payroll. Affected staff have been advised to adhere to the screening timetable and ensure their presence during the process.

The Commission stressed the importance of strict compliance with the schedule to ensure an orderly and transparent exercise. It also noted that only individuals whose names appear on the approved list will be screened.

Furthermore, the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) in all 23 local government areas has been directed to mobilize affected workers for the exercise.

The screening will begin on October 20, 2025, and continue until November 1, 2025, running daily from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Local Government Service Commission Headquarters in Makurdi. Each local government area will be attended to on designated dates as indicated in the official timetable.

A mop-up exercise has also been scheduled to cater to those who may miss their original screening dates: Zone A on October 30, Zone B on October 31, and Zone C on November 1, 2025.

Affected workers are required to present the following documents during the exercise:

Letter of first appointment and confirmation

Last promotion letter

Certificate of local government origin

Birth certificate or declaration of age

All academic qualifications

Valid means of identification

Bank account details, BVN, bank name, and National Identification Number (NIN) a

Governor Alia’s directive marks a significant step toward addressing the decade-long grievances of disengaged local government employees.

The move is viewed as part of his administration’s commitment to restoring trust in public institutions and ensuring that legitimate workers receive due recognition and entitlements.

Officials say the screening will lay the foundation for the reinstatement of qualified personnel, thereby restoring not only their employment but also public confidence in the transparency and fairness of the state’s employment practices.
