The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum and Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, has expressed deep concern over the increasing wave of defections from the PDP to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking on Saturday in Abuja after inaugurating the PDP National Convention Communication Sub-Committee, Mohammed said that many PDP governors and members who recently defected to the APC are already facing political difficulties.
He assured that PDP governors are working discreetly to strengthen unity within the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to him, the continued association of notable leaders such as former President Goodluck Jonathan and the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, with the PDP, shows that Nigerians still have confidence in the party.
In recent months, several prominent politicians have joined the emerging opposition coalition led by the African Democratic Congress (ADC), including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Senate President David Mark, and former presidential aspirant Dele Momodu.
At the same time, some PDP figures have defected to the APC, among them Governors Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom) and Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta), as well as the party’s 2023 vice-presidential candidate, Ifeanyi Okowa.
Reports also suggest that Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah and Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri may soon join the APC ahead of the PDP National Elective Convention slated for November 15–16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Reacting to the development, Governor Mohammed said he is “more than concerned” about the defections but noted that ongoing dialogue among party leaders has prevented the situation from worsening.
He said,
“If you ask me whether I am concerned about our governors leaving for the APC, I am more than concerned. But leadership is a burden. As the leader of a group of equals, I cannot dictate to my colleagues. A lot of engagement is happening behind the scenes.”
Mohammed accused the APC-led Federal Government of attempting to turn Nigeria into a one-party state through coercive means.
“You know the style of leadership of the APC government. They have the power of coercion; they have the power of everything. I can’t say my colleagues are wrong for leaving, but I have advised them that even those who defected are not finding things easier. The grassroots remain PDP and are unhappy with these defections,” he added.
The Bauchi Governor emphasized his commitment to the PDP, saying neither he nor his state has any reason to leave the party.
“Even today, I saw in the news that one of my senators is going. They are being controlled and induced, but Bauchi remains PDP. Nigerians still believe that change can only come through our party. Most of the measurable achievements of the federal government were initiated under PDP administrations,” he stated.
Mohammed urged defectors to leave peacefully without maligning the party, saying their exit would create room for new, capable members to join.
He expressed optimism that the forthcoming convention would produce credible leaders capable of challenging the APC and restoring public trust in the opposition.
On internal disputes within the PDP, the governor dismissed fears of division, noting that most litigations against the party were “artificially created” to destabilize it.
“We don’t have any faction in the PDP. Yes, some people have taken us to court to stop the convention, but we’re addressing those issues. Compared to other opposition parties, we are better organized — we have one National Chairman, one National Secretary, and one Publicity Secretary,” he said.
When asked about efforts to woo back former President Jonathan and Peter Obi, Mohammed said their association with the PDP reflects Nigerians’ continued faith in the party.
“People are still interested in this party, and seeing big names like Jonathan and Obi linked to us gives hope. As governors, we have set aside personal interests. I once aspired to be president in 2023 but stepped down and remained as governor. I’ve done my best, and I’m content. What matters now is unity and producing a leadership that Nigerians can trust to rescue the nation,” he concluded.
