In a move set to reshape the political landscape of the South East, Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah of Enugu State has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), declaring that the time has come to “chart a new course” for the state and its people.
Speaking on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, in Enugu, Governor Mbah described the move as a bold and strategic decision rooted in principle, development, and alignment with a national vision that offers greater opportunities for Enugu’s growth.
“Today, I stand before you to announce a break from the past, and to share a decision that will shape the road ahead. This concerns our values, how we organize ourselves politically, and how we secure the future of our projects and our people,” he declared.

Mbah expressed deep gratitude to Ndi Enugu for their trust in his vision of transformation, recalling how his “Tomorrow Is Here” mantra inspired hope in a period of growing political skepticism.
“When I declared that ‘Tomorrow Is Here,’ it struck a chord in your hearts. You put aside long-held skepticism and stood by us. Without that trust, the transformation we see today would never have happened,” he said.
The governor highlighted sweeping achievements across sectors—Smart Green Schools nearing completion, primary healthcare centres in all 260 wards, an 80% drop in crime, a state-of-the-art Command and Control Centre with AI-powered surveillance, over 1,000 kilometres of paved roads, a revived water system, massive revenue growth, and a booming tourism and investment landscape.
“It looks like Enugu on the national – indeed global – map,” he added confidently.
Mbah paid tribute to the PDP for the platform that propelled him into office, noting decades of shared history with the people of Enugu.
“For nearly three decades, the PDP and the people of Enugu walked side by side, united by shared purpose. Together, we built relationships that will always matter to me personally and to this state,” he said.
But he also made clear that leadership demands “difficult – even painful – decisions.”
“Today, after long reflection, we have made the decision to leave the PDP and join the APC,” the governor announced.
He revealed that the defection was a collective decision involving members of the National Assembly, State House of Assembly, State Executive Council, local government chairmen and councillors, political appointees, and more than 80% of party executives in the state.
“For decades, the South East – especially Enugu – has stood firmly behind the PDP, showing loyalty that shaped the party’s success. Yet despite this history, our voices were too often disregarded when it mattered most,” he lamented.
The governor said his move to the APC was driven by a desire to align Enugu’s destiny with the federal centre, ensuring fair representation and access to national opportunities.
“I have found in His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, not just a leader of our nation, but a partner in purpose, a man with the courage to look beyond today and make the tough choices that secure lasting prosperity for tomorrow,” Mbah stated.
He praised the President’s vision and commitment to the South East, stressing shared values of infrastructure expansion, decentralization of opportunities, youth empowerment, and grassroots development.
“This move is bigger than politics – it is about alignment at scale. It is about connecting Enugu’s destiny with the central hub of broader reforms shaping our nation,” he explained.
Anticipating questions over the political and developmental impact of his defection, the governor reassured residents:
“Our Igbo DNA does not change; our destiny does not change. What changes is that our vision now finds stronger reinforcement at the federal level. The progress you see today will not slow, and the projects we have begun will be completed.”
Mbah also sent a strong message to the political class in the South East: “Our people are watching. What they care about most are results. True leadership is about service to the people, not service to self. Principles, not personalities, must guide us.”
Calling for unity and renewed trust from Ndi Enugu, the governor concluded with a promise of an even more ambitious chapter for the state under the APC umbrella.
“This is not a detour, but a conscious step towards a more compelling future. Let us gather with renewed hope to build the Enugu – and the Nigeria – that our children deserve,” he said.
