BREAKING: Has Been More Than A Friend – Tinubu Explains Close Ties With Abu Ibrahim

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid a glowing tribute to his longtime friend and political ally, Senator Abu Ibrahim, describing him as more than a friend but a brother, as the former lawmaker clocks 80.

In a statement celebrating Senator Ibrahim’s 80th birthday on October 28, 2025, President Tinubu reflected on their enduring friendship, which dates back to their days in the Senate during the aborted Third Republic in 1992.

“Abu has been more than a friend. He is my brother,” Tinubu said, recalling how their bond was forged when Ibrahim represented Katsina South Senatorial District under the defunct National Republican Convention (NRC), while he represented Lagos West under the defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP).

The president said their friendship and political partnership had always been rooted in shared ideals of justice, good governance, and democratic advancement — values that transcended political divides.

Tinubu hailed Senator Ibrahim as a principled statesman and trusted ally whose steadfast commitment to democracy, progressive politics, and nation-building has defined his public life.

He recounted their shared experience during the struggle against military dictatorship, particularly after the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election. The All Progressives Congress (APC) national leader revealed that both of them, along with other senators, reconvened in Lagos to condemn the annulment and demand an end to military rule — an act of defiance that led to their detention by the police.

“When the authorities released him and left the rest of us in the cell, Abu refused to leave, insisting that all of us be released together,” Tinubu recalled.

He praised Ibrahim’s courage, loyalty, and consistency over the years, noting that his contributions to the formation and consolidation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2013 were invaluable.

According to the president, Senator Ibrahim has remained a voice for peace, unity, and national progress within the APC and across the country. He also lauded his role in supporting his presidential ambition in 2023 and his continued counsel in the implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

“He supported my aspirations to be President in 2023 and joined me on the campaign trail across the country. Since the beginning of our administration on May 29, 2023, Abu has continued to provide invaluable support and ideas for the successful implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda” the President wrote.

Tinubu described the octogenarian as a patriot who has lived a life of dedication to public service and to the pursuit of a greater Nigeria. He thanked him for his unwavering friendship and support, praying for continued health and strength for the elder statesman.

“I thank Senator Ibrahim for his steadfast support and cherished friendship over the years. I join his family, friends, and associates in praying for many more years of good health and renewed strength for him,” Tinubu said.
