New Benfica manager, Jose Mourinho, has confessed that joining Fenerbahce was a mistake, as he begins his latest chapter back in Portugal.
The 62-year-old replaced Bruno Lage, who was dismissed after Benfica’s 3-2 home defeat to Qarabag in the Champions League. Mourinho himself had been sacked by Fenerbahce last month following their play-off loss to Benfica.
The former Chelsea, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Manchester United and Tottenham boss has signed a two-year deal with the Lisbon giants.
Speaking at his unveiling, Mourinho said he is back where he belongs:
“The ideal context for me is to return to coaching one of the biggest clubs in the world. My career has been rich so far, I’ve coached the biggest clubs in the world in different countries.
I made the wrong choice, with no regrets. I made a mistake going to Fenerbahce; it wasn’t my cultural level, as far as football is concerned.
I gave everything until the last day, I had to mourn, but returning to Benfica is returning to my level, and my level is coaching the best clubs in the world.”
Mourinho will be tasked with restoring Benfica’s domestic dominance and making them competitive again in Europe.
