[BREAKING] Nnamdi Kanu: We Never Protested Over Any Court-Related Matter — Barrister

In a recent public address on the responsibilities of legal practitioners in defending civic rights, Opara maintained that the Nigerian Constitution is the ultimate authority and overrides any law that attempts to silence lawful expression.

“Even if such a law exists, it cannot stand,” he said. “The Constitution is clear—any law inconsistent with it is invalid.”

Opara explained that lawyers’ participation in protests should not be misconstrued as interference with judicial matters. He emphasized that his activism and public demonstrations have always been aimed at challenging oppression and demanding accountability, not influencing court judgments.

“We don’t protest to ask courts for judgments,” he clarified. “Our aim has always been to oppose injustice and defend citizens whose rights are being trampled upon.”

He further urged members of the legal profession to see advocacy as an integral part of their ethical duty, noting that lawyers have an obligation to stand up whenever fundamental freedoms are threatened.

According to Opara, the right to peaceful assembly and expression belongs to every Nigerian—including legal professionals—and exercising it strengthens democracy.

“A lawyer’s duty does not end in the courtroom,” he said. “It extends to protecting the values of justice wherever they are under attack.”

Opara’s remarks come amid growing discussions about the boundaries of civic activism and the participation of legal practitioners in social justice movements.
