BREAKING: Senate Approves Senator Ashiru’s Proposal to Establish Military Base in Kwara South

The Senate has endorsed Senator Oyelola Ashiru’s request for establishment of military forward base in Kwara South to tackle insecurity.

The Senate approved the proposal following motion moved by the Deputy Senate Leader who is the representative of Kwara South.

The plenary presided over by Senate President Godswill Akpabio urged the Federal Government to establish a permanent military base in Kwara South Senatorial District near the forest belts of Ifelodun LGA as a rapid response hub.

They also mandated the Chief of Defence Staff and Inspector-General of Police to deploy additional troops and special units to clear the forests and restore normalcy in affected communities.

In addition, the Senate called on NEMA to immediately provide humanitarian relief to displaced persons in Ifelodun and other affected LGAs, and urge the Federal Government to compensate families of fallen forest guards and vigilantes who died defending their communities.

FactualTimes reports that the Senate Committees on Defence, Police Affairs, and National Security and Intelligence are expected to undertake an on-the-spot assessment of affected areas and report back within two weeks.

The Lawmakers also summoned Minister of Defence, Chief of Army Staff, and Inspector-General of Police to brief the Senate in plenary on the coordinated federal response to insecurity in Kwara South.
