Southeast’s Strategic Shift to APC Aims for Future Presidency, Says Senator
Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi of Ebonyi State has clarified that the Southeast’s growing alignment with the All Progressives Congress (APC) is a calculated political strategy. The move aims to build national alliances essential for a future Igbo presidential bid.
He explained this during a recent Arise TV interview. The senator emphasized the need for the region to connect with the federal government’s center of power. He stated this is crucial for the overall interest of the Igbo people.

“We are moving into the APC as a people,” Senator Nwebonyi said. “We feel this is the reason why we should connect to the center. We must belong so that we’ll be counted.”
Building Alliances for a Presidential Bid
The lawmaker detailed the principle of reciprocity guiding this political shift. He expressed confidence that the region will one day ask for the presidency. When that time comes, they will need support from other geopolitical zones.
He specifically mentioned expecting backing from the Southwest, South-South, North-Central, and Northeast. “So we must belong so that we can be counted at the right time,” Senator Nwebonyi stated. This long-term vision is central to the defection to the APC.
Criticism of Past PDP Administration
Senator Nwebonyi strongly criticized the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He recalled that the Southeast overwhelmingly supported the PDP during its 16-year rule. Despite this loyalty, he said the region had little to show for its support.
“The only thing we could show for it was the position of Deputy Senate President,” he noted. He accused the PDP-led government of deliberate neglect and abandonment. He claimed there was no major infrastructural development in the Southeast during that era.
This perceived marginalization led to political fragmentation in the 2023 elections. The senator observed that the people moved to different parties like PDP, Labour Party, and APGA. He concluded by stating that the APC has now found a “rejected people” and decided to include them in national affairs. This strategic defection to the APC is seen as a foundational step toward achieving a future Igbo presidential bid.
