BREAKING: Tinubu Nominates Aminu Yusuf as NPC Chairman, Pushes for Quick Senate Approval

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has forwarded the nomination of Dr. Aminu Yusuf as the new Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC) to the Senate for confirmation, according to official communications read during Wednesday’s plenary session.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio presented the executive request during the upper chamber’s proceedings, highlighting the president’s intent to strengthen key federal institutions amid ongoing economic and social reforms.

The nomination of Yusuf, a seasoned public administrator with expertise in population dynamics and development planning, comes as part of a broader slate of appointments across agencies including the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

The NPC, established under the 1989 National Population Policy, plays a pivotal role in conducting censuses, managing vital registration, and advising on population-related policies that influence resource allocation, healthcare, and urban planning in Africa’s most populous nation.

Yusuf’s prospective leadership is expected to prioritize the long-delayed 2023 Population and Housing Census, which has been postponed multiple times due to logistical and funding challenges.Sources close to the presidency indicate that Dr. Yusuf, hailing from Kano State in the North West geopolitical zone, brings over two decades of experience in public service, including roles in federal ministries focused on health and human development.

His appointment aligns with President Tinubu’s administration’s emphasis on data-driven governance, as evidenced by recent approvals for 20 federal commissioners to the NPC in late 2023, nine of whom were renewed for second terms.

While the Senate is anticipated to screen nominees expeditiously, as urged in Tinubu’s letter, stakeholders in civil society and demographers have welcomed the move.

“A robust NPC under capable leadership is essential for addressing Nigeria’s youth bulge and migration pressures,” noted Dr. Fatima Bello, a population expert at the University of Lagos, in a statement to reporters.

The confirmation process could unfold within weeks, pending committee reviews. This development follows a series of high-level appointments by Tinubu, including those for the National Assembly Service Commission earlier this year, signaling a concerted effort to fill leadership vacuums in statutory bodies.
