BREAKING: Wike Vows All FCT Judges Will Own Official Residences by 2027

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has assured that by the end of President Bola Tinubu’s first term, no judge serving in the FCT will be living in a rented apartment.

Wike gave the assurance on Monday during the flag-off ceremony for the design and construction of new residences for the Heads of Courts in the FCT. He said the initiative would bring an end to the long-standing issue of judges living in rented houses.

“Before the end of Mr President’s first tenure, no judge of the FCT High Court will be staying in a rented apartment,” Wike stated. “This does not include the Federal High Court or National Industrial Court, but specifically the FCT High Court judges.”

According to PUNCH Online, the project is part of the Tinubu administration’s ongoing efforts to improve judicial infrastructure, following the construction of 40 judges’ quarters in Katampe District and new magistrate courts in Jabi.

Wike also explained that the initiative is not an interference by the executive arm, but part of the statutory responsibility of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) to provide public buildings in the territory.

He revealed that the new policy approved by President Tinubu allows heads of courts—including the President of the Court of Appeal, Chief Judges of the Federal and FCT High Courts, and the Judge of the National Industrial Court—to retain the official residences as personal property upon retirement.

“As they retire, the properties become theirs. That is the approval of Mr President, and that’s why the seal of oaths has been issued in their names,” Wike clarified.

Also speaking at the event, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), praised the initiative, describing it as a boost to the dignity, independence, and efficiency of the judiciary.

“The provision of secure and befitting accommodation for heads of court will enhance operational independence, personal security, and institutional integrity,” Fagbemi said. “It will also help reduce corruption because issues like housing insecurity will no longer exist.”

He commended President Tinubu and Minister Wike for prioritising judicial welfare and strengthening institutional independence through infrastructural investment.
