Residents of Yola, the Adamawa State capital, have expressed mixed sentiments about the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and its prospects ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a street opinion survey conducted by TG News, citizens voiced both optimism and skepticism about the party’s growing visibility in the state and its ability to challenge the dominance of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Mansur Iliya Maiha, a political observer, praised the ADC, describing it as a “fresh alternative” to the major political blocs. “The party has positioned itself as a vehicle for change, particularly appealing to younger voters and those disillusioned with the status quo,” he said. “We are hopeful, but we will wait to see them deliver.”
However, not all respondents shared this optimism. Clatus Gabriel, a mechanic in Yola, argued that the ADC’s coalition efforts appear driven more by personal ambition than ideology. “All those stakeholders moving from one party to another—like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Senator Aishatu Binani, and former Governor Jibrilla Bindow—are only pursuing personal interests,” he said. “They couldn’t achieve their goals in their previous parties, so they’re trying another movement, which I believe won’t succeed.”

Similarly, Bilkisu Muhammad, an Atok delegate, dismissed the ADC’s prospects, describing the movement as “a failed one” due to credibility issues among its stakeholders. “The same politicians who identify as the party’s critical stakeholders have failed to deliver in the past. They lack credibility,” she argued.
Other residents echoed these sentiments, noting that while the ADC tries to brand itself as “new,” it remains entangled with established political figures, undermining its claim of being a genuine break from the past.
Political analysts have also pointed out that the ADC lacks a clear ideological framework or policy platform distinct from the ruling APC and opposition PDP. Critics argue that the party’s agenda is heavy on rhetoric but light on specifics, with unclear strategies for governance.
Nationally, the ADC has positioned itself as an alternative political platform advocating youth participation and transparency. The party gained attention in 2025 following coalition talks with several smaller parties, sparking debates about whether it could emerge as a formidable third force.
However, a recent Africa Polling Institute (API) survey revealed that only about 10% of respondents in select northern states expressed strong confidence in the ADC’s ability to win elections, highlighting the challenges the party faces in grassroots mobilization and ideological clarity.
As the 2027 general elections approach, Adamawa residents remain divided over whether the African Democratic Congress can translate its message of change into tangible political success.
