Former Vice President Dr. Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka has mourned former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, as “the President who won but was never declared and sworn into office.”
In a statement, Kalonzo expressed his shock and sorrow upon learning of Raila’s passing as he arrived at Heathrow International Airport on Wednesday morning.
“Rt Hon Odinga, affectionately known as ‘Baba’ by his loyal supporters, family, and friends and even begrudgingly admired by his fiercest critics was truly more than just an enigma. Baba was a relentless force of nature, always pushing forward despite the many obstacles he faced,” Kalonzo remarked.
He celebrated Raila as a key figure in Kenya’s second liberation, recalling the sacrifices and resilience he showed during the fight for multiparty democracy in the 1980s and 1990s.

“Baba was the longest-serving political detainee in Kenya. At the core of the struggle for multipartyism, Raila bore the scars from the slings and arrows, bullets and batons that no one should ever have to endure. Yet, every time he emerged from detention and torture, he would raise his arms to the sky, his fist clenched in determination, resolved that the pain he endured would lead to democracy and freedom for his beloved Kenya,” he added.
Kalonzo praised Raila’s unwavering spirit, calling him “the Champion of the Second Political Liberation,” whose vision and bravery significantly influenced Kenya’s democratic journey.
The Wiper Party boss further reflected on their enduring political partnership, reminiscing about their close teamwork in the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD), the National Super Alliance (NASA), and most recently, the Azimio la Umoja – One Kenya Coalition.
“Since 2013, I’ve had the unique honor of working closely and passionately with my brother, serving as his running mate twice in both CORD and NASA, and standing by his side in the Azimio La Umoja – One Kenya Coalition. We’ve learned so much from each other and have shared our fair share of struggles,” he shared.
Kalonzo praised Raila’s crucial role in Kenya’s constitutional evolution, especially in advocating for the 2010 Constitution, which decentralized power and transformed governance.
“From the Opposition benches to the Government side as Prime Minister, and on August 27, 2010, the day our New Constitution was enacted, my brother Raila was key in shifting power away from an imperial presidency to a people-focused constitutional framework. For that, we owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude,” Kalonzo expressed.
The former Vice President also offered his condolences to Mama Ida Odinga, their children Rosemary, Raila Junior, and Winnie, along with the entire Odinga family, assuring them of his support during this difficult time.
“I can’t begin to fathom the shock and sorrow you’re experiencing right now, but I want you to know that my family and I are standing with you. I know that all Kenyans are keeping you in their thoughts and prayers,” he said.
