Minimum Wage Tug-of-War: FG and Governors at Odds

Though, an X user with user name @imranmuhdz reports that FG have raised it from N60,000 to N62,000. The governors’ main concern is that If they agree to pay more than N57,000, they’ll be left with virtually nothing to spend on development projects in their states. A large chunk of their resources would go towards paying workers’ wages, leaving little room for anything else. But the negotiations are far from over. It’s an intense back-and-forth between the government and labor unions, with offers and counter-offers flying across the table.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) recently rejected the government’s proposal of N60,000, demanding a higher figure. The labor unions had initially asked for a whopping N615,000 but then scaled back to N497,000 and then N494,000. It’s like a high-stakes game of tug-of-war, with each side trying to gain the upper hand. Frustrations boiled over earlier this week, leading to a nationwide strike that brought economic activities to a standstill. Although the strike was short-lived, it sent a clear message that workers mean business when it comes to getting a fair wage.
