Benfica manager Jose Mourinho has launched a scathing attack on referee Sergio Guelho, accusing him of lacking “personality” after his side were held to a 1-1 draw by Rio Ave on Tuesday night.
Benfica had taken the lead in the second half but were pegged back in injury time by their struggling opponents.
Mourinho’s fury centred on a disallowed first-half goal that would have given his team the advantage.
“We scored a goal. If this is the new football, when goals are ruled out because a small toe steps on another small toe, I don’t like this new football. But that’s the way it is, so we have to accept it,” he told reporters.
The former Chelsea and Manchester United boss added:
“We kept trying and finally got the goal, but we conceded when we can’t concede. It’s tremendously unfair and an awful result for us. It was the game Rio Ave wanted and which the referee allowed.”
On referee Guelho, Mourinho was blunt: “He has no personality.”
