The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has sealed two Chinese-owned supermarkets in Jabi District and eight cosmetics shops at Wuse Market, Abuja, over the sale of unregistered, expired, and improperly labelled products.
In a statement issued on Friday by the agency’s Deputy Director of Public Relations and Protocol, Adegboyega Osiyemi, NAFDAC said products worth more than ₦170 million were confiscated during the enforcement exercise.
According to the agency, the supermarkets—located along Mike Akhigbe Way and Ebitu Ukiwe Street in Jabi—were shut down following consumer complaints and subsequent surveillance, which uncovered the sale of unregistered food items and products labelled only in Chinese, in violation of Nigeria’s labelling regulations requiring English translations.

“Despite initial denial by the operator of one of the supermarkets, surveillance confirmed the outlet was already in full operation and selling unregistered products,” the statement read.
The operation, carried out by NAFDAC’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate in collaboration with the Federal Task Force on Counterfeit and Substandard Medicines, was led by Assistant Chief Regulatory Officer, Musa Embugushiki.
In a related raid, eight cosmetics shops at Wuse Market were also sealed for selling banned and harmful items, including aphrodisiacs, skin-whitening products, and fake dermatological medicines.
NAFDAC disclosed that some shop owners falsely posed as dermatologists and pharmacists, luring unsuspecting consumers with promises of body enhancement, skin lightening, and sexual performance boosts.
Among the seized products were Wenicks Capsules, Maxman Capsules, Curvy Weight Gain, Skin Whitening Gummies, Collagen, Royal Jelly, White Doll, Dr. Gallery Plus, Glutathione Whitening Gummies, and several herbal concoctions such as Maiz Zaki Syrup and Dr. Nafisa Herbal Medicine.
NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, warned that such products pose severe health risks, including kidney damage, skin cancer, irritability, and memory loss. She stressed the agency’s commitment to protecting public health through strict enforcement of regulations.
“Foreign investors and nationals are reminded that any product intended for the Nigerian market must be duly registered with NAFDAC. We encourage consumers to verify the authenticity of products before purchase,” Adeyeye stated..See More Here
