Okpebholo to New Commissioners: Wear Asiwaju’s Cap to Cabinet Meetings or Stay Home

The Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has instructed all newly sworn-in commissioners and special advisers to wear the ‘Asiwaju’ cap to cabinet meetings.

The governor disclosed this during the inauguration of the commissioners at the New Festival Hall in the Government House on Tuesday.

The governor’s directive, captured in a video that has now gone viral on Wednesday, witnessed Okpebholo saying that Tinubu made his victory in the November 2024 election possible.

Reiterating his point during the same event, Okpebholo declared, “If you are wearing a traditional dress and you come to the exco without an Asiwaju cap, you’re going back.”

The cap features an insignia of President Bola Tinubu. ‘Asiwaju’, which loosely translates to forerunner in Yoruba, is the president’s nickname.

The governor warned that failure to comply would lead to exclusion from executive sessions.

His remarks have however sparked backlash on social media, with many criticising the directive as an “excessive display of political allegiance”.

THE WHISTLER contacted the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua for comments on the directives, but has yet to receive any as of press time.
