Maxwell Opara, one of the lawyers representing the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has condemned the use of force by security operatives during the recent protest in Abuja calling for Kanu’s release.
The protest, which took place near the Ministry of Women’s Affairs, was peaceful until a combined team of police and other security officers fired tear gas to disperse the demonstrators. Speaking shortly after the incident in an interview with AIT News, Opara expressed anger and disappointment at the government’s actions.
He questioned why the police would attack peaceful protesters instead of using their energy to fight the bandits and terrorists terrorizing parts of northern Nigeria. “Along the road, is that not where we were having our peaceful protest? Was anybody violent? Then what brought about tear gassing protesters, what brought about using police to shoot?” he asked.

Opara went on to say that the kind of bullets and force used against the protesters could have made a real difference if they were directed toward the bandits operating in states like Zamfara and Katsina.
“The kind of bullets they shot here, I’m telling you, had it been that they shot it in places like Zamfara and Kastina, we shouldn’t be talking about Bandits and terrorists,” he said.
