Premier League Explains VAR Decision to Award Chelsea’s First Goal vs Wolves

The Premier League has clarified why the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) overturned an offside call to award Chelsea’s opening goal in their 3-1 win over Wolves on Monday night.

Tosin Adarabioyo swept home in a crowded box after the ball deflected into his path, but the assistant referee immediately flagged for offside.
Following a review, VAR determined that Matheus Cunha had played Tosin onside, prompting referee Peter Bankes to award the goal.

The league said in a statement:

“The referee’s call of no goal was checked by VAR, who determined that Tosin was in an onside position and recommended that the goal was awarded.”

Sky Sports pundit Alan Smith added:

“Tosin does well to react and control the ball on his thigh and dispatch the finish. Matheus Cunha on the far side played him onside when Reece James let fly.”

Tosin has now scored three goals in three games for Chelsea, including a brace in their FA Cup victory over Morecambe.
