According to a report by Times of Israel, on October 10, 2025, President Donald Trump has stated that Hamas “probably lost 70,000 people” since the terror group’s October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, appearing to reference the total death toll reported by the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry.
Speaking at a White House cabinet meeting, Trump characterized the casualties as significant retaliation.
“From the Hamas standpoint, they probably lost 70,000 people. That’s big retribution,” the president said.
However, Trump’s figure appears to encompass the overall death toll in Gaza, which does not distinguish between civilians and combatants.

The Hamas-controlled health ministry has reported approximately 70,000 deaths since the conflict began, though these numbers include non-combatants.
In contrast, Israel has stated it killed around 22,000 combatants as of August, a substantially lower figure that specifically refers to Hamas fighters.
The president emphasized that the violence must come to an end. “But at some point that whole, that whole thing has to stop, and we’re going to see to it,” Trump declared.
Looking toward the future of the devastated territory, Trump outlined plans for Gaza’s reconstruction. “Gaza is going to be slowly redone,” he said, pointing to commitments from various Arab and Muslim countries to participate in the rebuilding efforts.
The statement comes amid ongoing ceasefire negotiations and international discussions about Gaza’s post-war future.
The territory has suffered extensive damage during the prolonged conflict, with infrastructure, homes, and essential services severely impacted.
Trump’s comments reflect the administration’s involvement in brokering peace agreements while simultaneously addressing the massive humanitarian and reconstruction challenges facing Gaza.
The rebuilding process is expected to require substantial international cooperation and funding, with regional partners playing a crucial role in the effort.
The discrepancy between Trump’s casualty figures and Israel’s combat death statistics highlights the ongoing debate over accurate casualty counts in the conflict.
